This workshop aims to familiarize the learner with the music and vocabulary of movements that accompany African choreographic practices, with a focus on the dance practices of the Ivory Coast. It allows participants to situate each dance in its context of execution, to locate the people who practice it as well as the relevant social categories, to list the costumes and the instruments of practice, the meaning of the steps in addition to the prohibitions that surround the execution of the dances.
This workshop revolves around the learning of skills with a focus on rhythm from various traditional and modern African practices, and includes the performance of ensemble routines and individual or collective improvisations.
